Abstract
Laser ablation is an established process for machining and structuring materials of various kinds [1]. The momentum transfer during ablation can be orders of magnitude larger than the photon pressure, due to the mass ejected backwards from the ablation site. The idea of using this effect for space debris removal has gained significant interest in recent years: changing a fragment’s orbit through momentum transfer can make it fall and eventually, burning in the earth’s atmosphere.
