Whispering gallery modes in a single silica microparticle attached to an optical microfiber

Abstract

A stable and compact structure is experimentally demonstrated to excite whispering gallery modes in a silica microparticle (~10 μm) attached to a microfiber. With extinction ratios over 15 dB, Q factors over 450 are achieved.
