Optical Paleothermometry Using Nacre

Abstract

We developed a technique based on hyperspectral imaging and thin-film modeling to nondestructively map the structure of nacre (mother of pearl). The extracted thickness of tablets constructing nacre is a proxy for ocean temperatures at the time of formation.
