Micron-scale ‘ink-jet’ created by optical vortex ablation

Abstract

We have demonstrated the creation of a micron-scale ‘ink-jet’ by employing optical vortex laser ablation. The optical vortex induces a radial inward mass transport of ink towards its dark core through a vaporization-induced recoil pressure, resulting in the formation of an ‘ink-jet’. The OAM then provides a spin of the melted ink towards the clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, assigned by the handedness of the vortex pulse, thereby stabilizing the formation of the ‘ink-jet’. The spinning speed of the droplets is also directly measured to be ~105 rpm.
