Liquid-crystal optical electrodes for neural interfacing

Abstract

Traditional systems for neural interfacing rely on electrons for signal transmission from the biological tissue. We discuss herein an alternative approach using light to both sense and transmit the neural signals. Central to this approach is novel passive, fluorophore-free optical electrode.
