Abstract

To determine the magnitude and direction of the horizontal wind by cw coherent lidar, some form of scanning in azimuth and elevation is required1. As is shown in Ref.2 it is possible to retrieve mean horizontal wind magnitude and direction from radial velocity data around horizontal circles centered on the vertical axes of the scanner (conical scanning). The representativeness of wind velocity values derived from scans over parts of a full circle (sector conical scanning) was studied in Ref. 1,3. In this paper we discuss the influence of dynamical turbulence on statistical uncertainty of Doppler lidar measurement of mean wind velocity in dependence on sector scanning angle and number of rotation.
