Abstract
Different lidar systems are used to probe the atmosphere and these systems typically measure the backscattered return as a way of studying aerosol profiles. Some of the lidar systems have the additional capability of measuring the Doppler return from aerosols and molecules for use in determining wind profiles. Other lidar systems have been designed to detect the Raman scattering phenomenon as a way of studying the distributions of molecular species.
