Abstract
Eyesafe solid-state laser technology based on the holmium 5I7-5I8 transition is being vigorously developed by NASA in a focussed program directed towards their ultimate use in atmospheric and planetary remote sensing from orbital platforms. Specifically thulium and holmium sensitized yttrium lithium fluoride (Tm,Ho:YLiF4) lasers have benefitted from much recent effort in which improvements in efficiency, Q-switched operation and single frequency oscillation have been demonstrated(1,2,3).
