An Algorithm for the Recognition and Tracking of Aircraft Wake Vortices with a Continuous Wave Coherent Laser Radar*

Abstract

A real-time algorithm for localizing and actively following wake vortices is described. Results from an experiment at Memphis airport and from modeled data are discussed. This is the first such system to track vortices, resulting in a more efficient scan and allowing more frequent estimates of location and strength.
