Photonic Crystals for the Visible Spectrum Based on Two-Dimensional Solid-State Arrays

Abstract

Photonic crystals have been fabricated from dielectric arrays having periodicities of 0.188 to 0.278 µm. At these sizes, the visible spectrum transmission exhibits attenuations originating in the associated photonic band structure. The properties of these attenuations are controlled by the compositions and geometries of the arrays.
