Abstract

Optical studies of nanocrystalline silicon were performed, which include: photoluminescence, excitation, and absorption spectroscopy. The results presented here differ from those observed in porous silicon and in other nanocrystalline silicon systems in various subtle ways. We report on the evolution of Si nanocrystals as they evolve into the size regime where quantum confinement effects are observed Size-selective spectroscopy on a distribution of different-sized Si nanocrystals in a methanol colloid exhibit uniform spectral shifts with excitation wavelength. Quantum confinement effects are clearly identified.
