Abstract
For light of a given wavelength incident on a grating in an arbitrary orientation the distribution of light among the various (reflected and/or transmitted) diffracted orders depends on the incident wave polarization. Such polarization effects of gratings, first discovered by Fraunhofer1, require a full electromagnetic approach2 for their explanation.
