Abstract

We present an efficient rigorous vector electromagnetic analysis of field distribution and power flow in finite length grating couplers. The electric and magnetic field components and power flow within the structure as well as the fields coupled into the output regions and into the substrate for typical devices are calculated. The nanoscale field distribution at the discontinuity between the waveguide section and the grating coupler are investigated.
