Zero-field magnetometry based on nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

At zero ambient field, ground state Zeeman sublevels in ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers lose first-order sensitivity to magnetic fields as they are mixed by crystal strain and electric fields. To overcome this, we address specific transitions using polarization-selective microwave excitation and perform zero-field magnetometry with a 250 pT/√Hz noise floor.
