Spin-mechanics with micro-diamonds in an ion trap

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

An ion trap is used to levitate a micro-diamond under low vacuum, yielding harmonic confinement of its librational mode. We show cooling and lasing of the librational mode by a mechanism similar to Sisyphe cooling and cavity optomechanics, acting through the magnetic coupling to NV spin ensembles.
