Abstract

The presence of many inconsistent data sets of optical constants for silver in the literature makes it difficult to conduct reliable theoretical analysis for different applications. In this work the most widely used optical data sets for silver by Palik and Johnson and Christy are reexamined and anomalies discussed. After reinterpretation of the results using theoretical analysis and supporting experimental measurements, we demonstrate that their data are not as reliable as may be desired, and conclude that an improved data set for silver is required for accurate predictions of results when using simulations.
