Abstract
Manipulation of atoms with light has important applications in atom clocks, magneto-optical traps, and atomic interferometry. One spectacular example of manipulation is the specular reflection of atoms from the repulsive force associated with a positively detuned evanescent light wave from a surface. It has been proposed to use this technique to construct an atomic waveguide and atomic cavities in hollow optical fibers.1
