Abstract

Subshot noise operation (−8.3 dB) of free-running laser diodes (LD) has already been experimentally demonstrated.¹ In these experiments, the LD were of transverse junction stripe type, and were close coupled to the photodetectors, so that the light was hardly propagating. However, subshot noise (−3 dB) balanced detection of quantum well LD has recently been reported.^2,3 In these later experiments, the LD were run in highly single-mode operation, using either external-cavity-stabilization with a grating, or injection locking.
