Abstract

A quantum mechanical counterpart to the micro-maser based on a single trapped ion may be established, where the vibrational motion of the ion in the trapping potential replaces the cavity field. The basic mechanism is Vibrational Amplification Assisted by Stimulated Emission of Radiation („VASER“). As for the demonstration of trapping states, the scheme allows one to eliminate the limitations from thermal effects with the use of presently available experimental techniques.
