Bandgaps and Group Velocity in Optical Lattices

Abstract

When cold atoms are trapped in the potential minima in a number of beams, they form an optical lattice [1,2]. The resulting medium with a periodic tensor susceptibility, can be probed by a beam of light. A characteristic feature of such a lattice is that the wavelength of the probe beam is of the order of the lattice constant. This gives rise to photonic bandgaps in the transmission spectrum.
