Measuring the Band Populations in a Purely Optical Dark Lattice

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We create a dark optical lattice structure in a standing wave tuned to the blue of the F=3 to F=3 transition of the 85Rubidium D1-line. The coupling of the F=3 ground state to both the F=2 and F=3 excited states induces a periodic potential in which the atoms are trapped at locations of purely circular polarisation, where they are only weakly coupled to the light field.
