Atomic-beam deceleration with the stimulated bichromatic force

Abstract

The stimulated force that is exerted on two-level atoms in a bichromatic standing light wave shows striking features as compared to the well-known behavior of the force in a monochromatic standing wave: For a given laser intensity, the maximum (‘rectified’) force is clearly stronger and it can act with its full strength over a much broader range of atomic velocities.
