Evaporative cooling and Bose Einstein Condensation in a high magnetic field

Abstract

We have developped a Bose Einstein Condensation setup based on an iron core electromagnet. In this Ioffe trap, operated at currents of only a few amps, evaporative cooling is performed in an unusually high bias magnetic field. We have found that the quadratic term in the Zeeman shifts entails a dramatic perturbation of evaporative cooling on the F=2 hyperfine ground state of 87Rb. This result has far reaching implications on investigation of BEC of atoms with a small hyperfine structure, as well as on the search of Feshbach resonances [1].
