Abstract

Nd:YVO4 (yttrium orthovanadate) laser crystals developed in ’60s possess unique spectroscopic properties resulting from unusual crystal-field which is modified by lattice vibrations (e. g., phonons) (1,2). In addition, recent Raman spectroscopic studies showed that micro-inhomogenuitics depend on the method of crystal growth [3]. The Nd:YVO4 exhibits the highest slope efficiency yet reported for laser-diode pumping. However, detailed studies on their dynamical lasing properties have yet to be reported. In this paper, we study relaxation oscillation dynamics of a laser-diode-pumped microchip Nd:YVO4 laser paying special attention to the effect of inhomogeneous broadening.
