Abstract
Projection synthesis was first proposed as a means to measure the probability distribution for the phase of a field mode [1]. It is a procedure by which the probability, P(u) = ⟨|u⟩⟨u|⟩, associated with any pure-state projector |u⟩⟨u| for a field mode can be measured. The technique is based upon interference between the mode to be measured (a) and a second mode (b), prepared in a specially chosen state, followed by photon counting.
