A New Kind of Soliton-Like Waves in a Three-Level Medium

Abstract

We consider a medium composed of atoms with effective three-level Λ -type scheme of excitation. Initially the medium is prepared in a coherent superposition of the low-energy levels 1 and 2. At the boundary, z = 0, laser field excites only one of the two allowed transitions, 1 – 3. Another field component, driving the transition 2 – 3, is generated inside the medium due to a stimulated Raman process.
