Phase Domains, and Spatial Solitons in Supercritically Bistable Systems

Abstract

Spatial localized structures (spatial solitons) have been so far predicted in subcritically bistable systems [1]. In optics such structures have been found in passive and active resonators with intracavity saturable absorber, or with nonlinear-focusing media, also in optical parametric oscillators [2]. These systems can display subcritical bifurcation of plane waves, which is at the root of subcritically-bistable spatial localized structures.
