Investigation of wavevector interaction in optical pattern formation by Fourier filtering

Abstract

Spontaneous patterns in dissipative system far from equilibrium are usually extended in real space but are strongly localized in Fourier space indicating this to be the natural starting point for a control or manipulation of pattern formation [1]. The genuine advantage of optics compared to pattern forming systems of other nature is that this Fourier space is readily accessible in the rear focal plane of a simple lens — in real time and in the very same form as a light field as the pattern itself. Beside possible applications as laser beam shaping, this can be expected to enable unique experimental investigations on the mechanisms underlying pattern formation.
