Resotron - New Concept of the Ir Fel Based on the Dissipative Instability

Abstract

The novel concept of shortwavelength undulator-free free electron laser, ”Resotron”, was proposed in [1,2]. The lasing mechanism in the Resotron is the electron beam dissipative instability, which occurs in the presence of absorbing medium. Contrary to the conventional FEL’s and Cherenkov oscillators, the gain is caused here by the absorption: the instability is absent for transparent medium (imaginary part of dielectric susceptibility Imε → 0).
