Propagation Effects and Selection Rules for Transverse Mode Excitation in Nonlinear Fabry-Pérot Resonators

Abstract

Pattern formation in nonlinear resonators has often been considered in the uniform field limit, ignoring longitudinal variations. Even though this might be possible in a ring resonator, we demonstrate that in a Fabry-Perot such an approach will in general fail, since there are two encounters of the field with the medium during a roundtrip.
