A Theoretical Approach to the Risken-Nummedal Instability in Erbium-Doped Fibre Lasers

Abstract

The Risken-Nummedal (RN) multimode instability has been by far much more elusive than the single-mode one, the Lorenz-Haken instability, the first observation of the RN instability having being reported very recently in an erbium-doped fibre laser (EDFL) [1]. This observation is particularly relevant not only because of its fundamental character but for the new possibilities it opens for the understanding of the richness of fibre-laser instabilities.
