As bandwidth demands increase, the spectrum in an optical fiber becomes more and more precious. Transmitting more data into a given spectral region requires narrower optical filters with flat tops and steep skirts and requires advanced modulation formats. At the same time, cost, power consumption, and footprint must be reduced. All of this puts difficult demands on the optical components. One way to address these demands is to employ photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
