Abstract

A spectrally broadband, compact, miniaturized light source is realized nowadays as a first choice by the semiconductor superluminescent diode (SLD). Application areas range from optical telecommunication to industrial spectroscopy and also medical diagnosis, e.g. optical coherence tomography. The underlying emission process of SLDs is amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) originating from a delicate balance between spontaneously emitted photons and their stimulated emitted counterparts. Spectral broadening can be further enhanced by exploiting inhomogeneously broadened quantum dots resulting in tens of THz–wide optical spectra of light from such quantum dot superluminescent diodes (QD-SLDs). Still, fundamental aspects on these complex broadband light states regarding coherence properties of higher orders are barley studied, especially because experimental access to femtosecond time-resolved intensity correlations is a challenging task [1].
