Abstract
Mid-infrared (MIR) laser light generation, either in pulsed wave packets or in the continuous-wave (CW) mode, are of great interests for a variety of applications such as MIR spectroscopy. MIR generation is usually accomplished through a phase matched optical parametric oscillation (OPO) process in quadratic nonlinear crystals, which could produce energetic and ultrashort femtosecond pulses, but requires two inputs (the pump and the signal), and careful synchronization of them. On the other hand, in the largely phase mismatched condition, quadratic nonlinear interactions will turn to produce an equivalent cubic Kerr nonlinearity, called the cascaded quadratic nonlinearity. Especially, with a negative-signed nonlinearity, solitons can be created within the normal dispersion range. Then, a few-cycle soliton in the near-infrared will raise a MIR wave in the anomalous dispersion range [1], by means of the dispersive wave (DW) generation under the perturbation of high-order dispersion. However, the generation efficiency is limited compared to OPOs and the MIR pulse is chirped.
