Abstract
Slot waveguides are proven devices for enhancing nonlinear effects in integrated optical systems[1]. In these structures a large electric field can be concentrated within in a small area containing a material with a high nonlinearity and a relatively low refractive index. It has recently been noted[2] that slots combine strong optical mode confinement with large optical forces within the slot, and thereby make the waveguide strongly appropriate for exciting acoustic waves via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). This nonlinear mechanism has several important applications in integrated optics, including Brillouin lasers[3] and tunable slow-light systems[4].
