Abstract
The meta-atom, a basic building block of a novel category of artificial materials – metamaterials, is a human designed material system with a specific interaction with electromagnetic waves. The meta-atom topology and dimensions can easily control parameters of this interaction such as resonant frequency, linewidth and strength. Such degrees of the design freedom are especially important, when the frequency manipulation with the meta-atoms is targeted. The second harmonic generation or the difference frequency mixing with the meta-atom requires two or three resonant modes, respectively, to be coupled. Therefore the design of the meta-atom with respect to the given resonances is the center point of development of the metamaterial field.
