Abstract

Stacking one-dimensional arrays of rods gives rise to very interesting structures such as woodpile crystals for instance. However there are also situations where the woodpile structures are not designed for their promising optical properties per se. They are just a particular composite subject to nondestructive evaluation where optical measurements such as spectral reflection or transmission are expected to give information on the composition and to detect possible defects. In both cases, we are interested in the most efficient numerical way of calculating the electromagnetic response of the structure. We do not restrict our analysis to a specific spectral domain. We rather consider the ratio of wavelength to period and the ratio of the rod size to period as pertinent parameters.
