Silicon Nitride Waveguides Enable Stabilization of Gigahertz Frequency Combs from Diode-Pumped Solid-State Lasers

Abstract

Ultrafast diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSLs) are being pushed towards higher gigahertz pulse repetition rates to achieve frequency combs with wide comb line spacings and high power per mode. Previously, a significant fraction of the total output beam was required for the f-to-2f carrier envelope offset (CEO) frequency detection using supercontinuum generation (SCG) in standard photonic crystal fibers. Novel SCG-platforms [1,2] can reduce this energy requirement by more than an order of magnitude. Recently, we achieved the first CEO frequency (fCEO) detection from a 1-GHz DPSSL based on direct SCG in a silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide, using only 36 pJ of coupled pulse energy. Here, we present for the first time a tight CEO-lock from a gigahertz DPSSL utilizing this CMOS-compatible platform and demonstrate its excellent noise properties.
