Abstract

The van-der-Waals force lies at the heart of a host of phenomena in nature but is difficult to measure at the level of single atoms or molecules. Recently, the van-der-Waals interaction has been detected via the dipole blockade between two Rydberg atoms [1] and through microwave spectroscopy of the level shifts [2] during the early stages of van-der-Waals repulsion. Here we directly measure the effect of the van-der-Waals force between individual Rydberg atoms on their external degrees of freedom.
