A single ion and two photons: A programmable three-qubit interface

Abstract

We demonstrate a three-qubit protocol based on the sequential heraldedabsorption of two photons by a single 40Ca+ ion. The programmableprotocol provides quantum repeater functionality or serves as a single-ionquantum memory.
