Abstract

The completion of the report “Harnessing Light: Optical Science and Engineering for the 21^st Century” by COSE (Committee on Optical Science and Engineering) by the National Academy in 1998 has had a profound effect on optics related activities and the recognition of optics as a most pervasive and enabling field of technology. After a brief summary of the report – an update on its principal recommendations and other significant U.S. and global activities will be highlighted.
