Abstract
The vacuum-ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV FEL) promises to provide a quantum jump in vacuum-ultraviolet light intensity and spectral brightness. The ideas suggested by the values of these parameters are more akin to the laser experiments of the visible region than traditional VUV photophysics and photochemistry. Clearly, VUV nonlinear optical experiments will become possible.
