Abstract

As detailed in the 1998 National Research Council report, Harnessing Light: Optical Science and Engineering for the 21st Century, the commercial and military viability of new optical product technologies (imaging, guidance, information systems, communications, etc.) depends upon further improving optical system performance and cost, which in turn requires critical advances in optics manufacturing capabilities.
