Abstract
The electro optical revolution that began at the Laboratoire de Bellevue in France led aeronomers to realize the potential of the Fabry-Perot spectrometer for measurement of upper atmospheric temperature from Doppler line widths of atomic oxygen emission in airglow. An alternative offering much greater responsivity is the field-widened Michelson interferometer; for reviews see Ring and Schofield (1972) and Baker (1977).
