Abstract
Laser light coupled into the whispering-gallery modes of fused-silica microspheres can be used for cavity-enhanced evanescent-wave absorption sensing. It is shown how two orders of magnitude additional enhancement can be obtained by the simultaneous use of two modes of the tapered-fiber coupler, giving effective absorption path lengths of kilometers.
