Active ring resonator side-coupled M-Z interferometer optical switches

Abstract

Low power all-optical switches based on M-Z interferometer side-coupled with a ring resonator for get π -phase shift have been proposed [1]. However, the losses inside the ring and the coupler strongly affect the characteristics of switches. We suggest inserting a gain-controllable optical amplifier SOA into the ring to compensate all of the losses in the ring resonator as shown in Fig. 1.
