Abstract
We present a vector theory of four-wave mixing and use it to discuss the impact of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) on fiber-based parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters. We show that PMD induces large fluctuations in the amplified or converted signal and changes significantly the average amplifier gain.
