Light scattering by apoptotic cells

Abstract

We show changes in angular light scattering by live cells undergoing apoptosis. These changes were altered by overexpression of the mitochondria-bound anti-apoptotic protein BCL-xL. Our data suggest that initial apoptosis events and BCL-xL-acquired apoptosis resistance can be detected by light scattering, and may involve alterations in mitochondrial structure.
