Abstract

Conservation of energy and momentum are distinct laws of physics. The Minkowski momentum obeys energy conservation while the Abraham momentum is not conserved. I derive a generalized electromagnetic momentum from the canonical momentum, demonstrate an independent conservation law, and derive the Fresnel relations from conservation of energy and generalized momentum.
