Gaussian intensity fluctuations and the degree of polarization

Abstract

The normalized intensity fluctuations of arbitrary electric wave fields obeying Gaussian statistics are expressed in terms of the 3D degree of polarization. Several physical results that follow from this general formulation, e.g. for transverse beam-like electric fields, are discussed.
